Dear Jobseeker,
Job interviews are nerve-wracking experiences at the best of times.
No matter how confident you are that you have the ability to do the
job, making a good impression at the interview isn't always easy.
I know, I've been there
too! But I've also been on the other side of the table, interviewing
hopeful candidates, which helps me to see the bigger picture.
So, why do most people
quake at the thought of an interview?
To find the answer, let
me ask you a question: Can you identify with any of the following
statements?
You know that
you are capable of working to a high standard and achieving success
in your chosen field. But you just can't seem to convince employers
that you're the one for the job.
You get nervous
when faced with an interview and struggle to answer the questions.
Yet you know that if you could just appear more confident, it would
be a very different story.
You want kick
yourself afterwards, when you can easily think of great answers you
could have given.
Frustrating, isn't it? But time and time again you lose out to someone
you know isn't any more intelligent or skilled than you are.
If any of this sounds familiar, what can you do to turn the tide in
your favour?
The answer is simple: preparation. If you are properly prepared
for interviews, you'll feel more confident and you'll have the information
you need to answer even the most difficult questions.
Interviewers look for candidates who are well prepared and who can
be themselves. Of course, they know you are going to be a little nervous
and so they don't expect perfection. But they also don't expect you
to be a nervous wreck!
Tip: If you tend to be
over-anxious, you can prepare yourself by having mock interviews.
If you are still at college, your university careers service may provide
these, but being interviewed by a friend or preferably someone you
don't know well, perhaps a friend of a friend, is almost as good.
Now, let me ask you another question - how much do you value getting
the right job?
It's pretty important,
isn't it? After all, you spend around 40 hours a week at work and
will do so for approximately 40 years of your life.
Of course, it's unlikely that you'll spend 40 years in one job, and
that's all the more reason for learning how to perform well
in interviews.
Job interview skills can be learned - and since most people change
jobs every few years, whether they want to or not - you can't afford
not to have the skills you need to succeed.
Job interview questions are impossible to predict with 100% accuracy,
but there are patterns and you can learn to deal with difficult questions,
as well as common ones.
You have to be ready for different types of interview: one on one
interviews, paenl interviews, telephone interviews. And then there
are group interviews or assessment centres, which test your ability
to do the job in a range of different ways and can last for one or
two full days.
You also need to be prepared to handle behavioural interviews. And
you must know the correct way to give a presentation - as well as
the pitfalls which can destroy your confidence on the day.
